Knee Replacement in Buffalo, NY

Is Knee Replacement For You?

Knee replacement is a substantial surgery that is performed in extreme cases.  It is a surgical procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to relieve pain and disability. The deciding factors in whether or not knee replacement is necessary are pain and mobility. If the pain level in your knee is high enough to limit basic functions such as walking, knee replacement might be an option. The majority of doctors reserve this procedure for patients who are 50+ years old and suffer from arthritis. In addition, knee replacement is usually chosen after other methods of relief have proven ineffective.

Knee Replacement Surgery

Once your doctor has identified knee replacement as the appropriate step, your surgery will be scheduled. During surgery the patient is placed under general anesthesia. In the operating room, an incision will be made on the knee cap and this is where entry to the joint will take place. The joint will be replaced with an artificial one and the doctor will take the necessary steps to solidify it. Knee replacement surgery can be performed as a partial or a total knee replacement.  In general, the surgery consists of replacing the diseased or damaged joint surfaces of the knee with metal and plastic components shaped to allow continued motion of the knee.
